Contest: Skarmory vs. Seviper

Description

My first submission for :iconpokedorks:, in this case for their most recent contest [link] The goal here is to retell a fable or fairy tale as only Pokemon would.

It's hard to be loved. Especially if you're a 6-foot-tall bird with feathers of steel. But just because I said it's hard doesn't mean it's impossible.
To start from the beginning, it's not easy to be the King of the Sky, especially when it comes to finding food. The best way everyone shows respect for me is by running away, or else trying to fight back. I know my iron armor does provide some protection, but it doesn't help that much, so I have a very low success rate all the same.
My day started normally, or at least as normal as normal can get for a hungry Skarmory. The skies were not very fruitful that day, nor was the land far below. This meant, naturally, that I would have to settle for anything I could catch.
Even if that thing happened to be the most overconfident Seviper I had ever met.
"Hah!" he shouted upon my approach. "Now is my chance to challenge you, King of the Sky!"
"Boasting isn't going to save yourself, mister," I retorted, as I swooped in to make the kill.
It wasn't the smartest idea, but I had no other choice but to fight the Seviper. Being a Steel type, I was immune to the Fang Snake Pokemon's deadly fangs, but he had other tricks up his sleeve. And boy, he was confident! Apparently, that wretch felt like his coils could easily crush an iron bar - e.g. my neck. Because that was exactly what he did.
"Your brashness never fails to amaze me!" I shouted, gasping for breath as we plummeted towards the earth. "Why don't you pick on someone your own size, you wretched creature?"
"YOU are my own size," replied Seviper. "And anyway if I were to let you go, you'd probably be off like a shot. Then which one of us will be the fool?"
Tumbling through the bush, the two of us grappled and tore at each other's flesh. We were evenly matched at first, but I hadn't eaten all day and I was exhausted. It seemed as though I would end up losing, but then something grabbed Seviper's neck and yanked him away.
How comforting it was to know that there was at least someone in the world who could appreciate the majesty of the Armor Bird Pokemon.
Seviper was naturally pretty upset that the Trainer had intervened. He knew he could not strike the watchful human, so instead he lashed out with his poisonous tail and struck the Trainer's drinking canteen.
"My defeat is your curse," he hissed. "If you ever drink at the next spring you come across, you shall die for the scum you are!" And away he slithered into the forest.
I didn't know what he meant, but despite being very hungry and thirsty, I decided not to take any chances. Tailing my savior with some care, I resolved not to drink at the next spring.
When we did get there, I had to content myself with the berries that flourished nearby, while the Trainer filled his canteen in the spring. As I paused from my little snack, I noticed that the Trainer was having a bit of a hard time drinking himself. The water seemed to disappear from the Trainer's canteen when he tried to drink. No matter how much he tried to fill his canister, all the water was gone whenever he looked inside.
That was when I noticed the poisoned gash on the canteen. And now I realized what the wretched Seviper had meant and who he had meant it towards. With a flash of steely wings, I rushed in and slashed the canteen in half, allowing the Trainer to see the poison inside.
"You - " he spluttered, but now he saw what would have happened if I hadn't intervened. "You saved my life. Thank you."
"It is only a return favor for rescuing me," I said, bowing low in respect. "I am forever grateful to you, and I will be humbled to offer you my services."
We smiled at each other. And he bowed back.
Before long, I had my own Pokeball and my own life of comfort and all of the best food I could eat. And in return, whenever things turned sour, I was there to protect my trainer from all harm that came to find us.
For as we had taught each other that day, a little kindness can sometimes go a very long way.

I used the Aesop fable, "The Serpent and the Eagle", as the basis here. I drew the intial battle between yours truly (well, as a normal Skarmory. I'm playing the role of the eagle) and Seviper (the serpent), during ECE class yesterday. Funny thing is, I sketched the whole thing completely out of memory, lol. Skarmory I can understand, but the fact that I could draw Seviper without even looking at a reference pic is just plain remarkable. I love Skarmory's pose.
Hope you like it ^_^

Ya know...you've sparked my love for Skarmory again. I miss that flying piece of steel. I still have my card that made me luff him so much x3

Epic scene, and story to go along with it :D
